Working with Quail

We took our next step to creating quail habitat at The Sunset Lodge last week. Bob Miller dragged a harrow behind the ATV (which I always considered to be a hunting vehicle!). Jack “Greenjeans” Malacarne donned a new straw hat and filled his (new last year) broadcast spreader with sunflower seed. Jack, a hardcore MU Tiger, generally refuses to have anything to do with KU, Jayhawks, Kansas, or anything remotely associated with the above, but the quail experts convinced him that if one plants sunflower-the quail will come.

Better suited to lumberjacking than farming I tuned up the McCullough H-16 two-cycle chainsaw and wreaked havoc on a half dozen thorny locust tress. Sweating, bleeding and brimming with satisfaction we left six where they fell and used the tractor to drag the remainder into three brush piles to form a veritable “quail haven”.
